When there is plaque build up in the teeth and it is not removed properly, the gums can start bleeding. This plaque attaches itself to the teeth and because it contains bacteria it can start attacking healthy tissue that surrounds the teeth. Once this starts occurring, it will cause the gums to become inflamed. This in turn causes the bleeding when brushing or flossing the teeth. Once this starts happening, it is considered the first stage of gum disease, also known as gingivitis. Usually the bleeding will be the only symptom experienced during this stage, but other symptoms also include swollen, red or delicate gums, bad breath or bad taste in the mouth regardless of how many times you brush your teeth or use freshener. Once this starts happening, it is very important to treat it quickly and effectively as this stage of gum disease is reversible and you can get rid of gingivitis as quickly as you got it.
Based on the examination, the dentist can advise you on the type of gingivitis treatment that would help reverse the gingivitis and bleeding gums.
