The two main types of dental radiographs are inside the mouth, intraoral, or outside of the mouth, extraoral. If your dentist wants to find out more about issues occurring with the teeth or the health of the root of the tooth, or how teeth are developing inside of the mouth or to monitor the regular health of the teeth and jawbone then they will use Intraoral radiographs. If the dentist is interested in the jaw and skull and the development of the jaw compared to the teeth and perhaps identify any problems dealing with tooth and jaw relationships they will use extraoral radiographs.
There are various types of Intraoral radiograph. Bite-wing radiographs show the upper and lower teeth; each radiograph shows the tooth from the crown to the level of the supporting bone. You can use this image to detect decay between teeth and changes in bone height. Periapical radiographs show the root of the tooth and where the tooth is secured in the jaw line. Occlusal radiographs show how the teeth are developing, and how and where they are placed in the jaw. They can also give information about bone thickness.
There are also various types of extraoral radiographs. Panoramic radiographs shows the whole mouth including the upper and lower teeth and jaws on the same image. Cephalometric radiographs show the entire side of the head, which can be useful when creating an orthodontic treatment plan.
Our dental office has installed technology to save each radiographs taken, which will make it easier to compare any previous radiographs taken even if they’re from another dental office.
